Owego Doubles Team Advances to the NYS Qualifier

The Owego Boys Tennis doubles team of Tommy West and Matt Wiekchorst placed second at the Section IV, Class B Championships last Friday to advance to the NYS Qualifier later this week.  For West, its the fourth consecutive year advancing to the NYS Qualifier, which will be played this year on Friday & Saturday, May 24-25, at the Binghamton Tennis Center.

To qualify, West and Wieckhorst had to maneuver through a 20 team sectional tournament.  They defeated teams from Chenango Forks, Susquehanna Valley, and Maine-Endwell, before losing to the tournament champions from Norwich in the final.

Both players will be looking for a place in the NYS Championships, which takes place at the National Tennis Center in NYC, and to do this, will need to place in the top 3 at the NYS Qualifier.

Owego Boys Tennis Wraps Up Regular Season

The OFA Boys Tennis team finished off their regular season on Wednesday by dropping a hard fought battle against Johnson City.  Senior Tommy West rallied at first singles despite not feeling well to finish off his year with a 10-2 record.  In the process, Tommy won his 70th individual match, which is a new Owego Free Academy tennis record, topping a previous mark of 67 victories.  At second singles, sophomore Matt Wieckhorst concluded an impressive regular season with a 3 set victory.  Wieckhorst finishes the season with an individual 9-2 record, and will now prepare for the Section IV, Class B Tennis Tournament on Thursday and Friday, May 16-17.  West and Wieckhorst will pair up for doubles, where West is the defending Section IV, Class B champion.

The team is very sad to see its three seniors end their high school tennis careers.  West will continue on, but yesterday marked the conclusion for seniors Kyle Shuey and Joe Davies.  Shuey, who only played this season, did a phenominal job at second doubles this season, and for a beginner, improved by leaps and bounds.  His character, competitiveness, and overall willingness to improve will be missed, but we wish him well as he heads off to Penn State next season.  Davies, who anchored our third doubles team this season, finishes off his fourth year on the team.  Davies now heads off to Mansfield, and we wish him the best.

The team looks forward to returning 7 starters next season:  Wieckhorst, Connor Hart, Grant Lindhorst, Sean Smith, Richard Pado, Allan Bishop, and Jason Theal.   With the addition of a very good, and unbeaten, Modified team, next year’s squad should be deeper and very competitive.

Great season gentlemen!!!
