In the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Semifinal play off game, Horseheads defeated our Owego Lady Indians on Wednesday evening in Reppert Gymnasium. Horseheads, 17-2 on the season and ranked #21 in NYS’s Class AA state rankings, got off to a quick start and was able to withstand all efforts by Owego to scratch back into the game. The loss ends the Indians 8-game win streak, and turns the focus now to the Section IV, Class A Tournament that kicks off on Friday, 2/22.
Horseheads jumped out to a 21-12 lead after one period behind 10 points from sophomore center Amanda Schiefen, and unbelievably athletic team defense. After handling the quick start by Horseheads, Owego bounced back in the second quarter to chip the lead down to 5 points with 3 minutes remaining before halftime. But, it was short lived as Horseheads finished the half on a 8-0 run, including two banked in 3’s, to boost the lead to 13 mid way through. Turnovers doomed the Indians all night, as the team finished with 34 overall, 13 over their season average.
Some individuals really stepped up and played very well for the Lady Indians on Wednesday in the loss. Caitlin Watson had 4 points and 3 rebounds off of the bench, Shannon Hilliker had 6 points & 5 rebounds, and Emily Merrill collected 4 rebounds, had 3 blocks, and was the leading scorer with 11 points for Owego. Next up for Owego is a Section IV, Class A Semifinal game against Vestal next Friday evening. The winner of that contest advances to play #1 seed Maine-Endwell on Friday, 3/1, in the Broome County Arena.
