Owego Shuts Down Seton to Grab Division Lead

On Saturday evening, January 26th, the Owego Lady Indians put the clamps on the Seton Catholic Saints and won their fifth straight game by a score of 46-31.  The game not only improved the ladies to a 9-4 overall record (6-2 league), but boosted them to the top of the STAC Central Division with three league contests remaining.  The game started off very low scoring, as both team struggled to develop any kind of offensive rhythym in the first quarter.   Owego shot 2-13 from the floor and Seton 1-15 in the first quarter as a defensive struggle was taking form.  The second quarter was the turning point of the game though, as Owego took advantage of Seton foul trouble and went on a 12-1 run to begin the quarter, boosting a 2 point lead to 13 just before halftime.  The lead grew to 16 at the break, and 18 after three quarters, before Seton made a last ditch effort to rally in the fourth quarter, getting the lead down to 10 at one point.  But, Owego made 12 of 16 free throws in the 4th quarter and sealed an all important victory on the road.  Some unbelievably great individual efforts were put forth on both ends of the court.  Defensively, Shannon Hilliker and Emily Merrill did a fantastic job playing Seton’s leading scorer Angelica Hauer (6’3 center).  Hauer was limited to 8 points, and had a tough time even getting catches inside.  Also standing out on the defensive end was Ciarra Bodnar, Jill Silvanic, Caitlin Watson, Kira Thalacker, Sam Slavetskas, and Chelsea Murphy, who played the diamond zone defense and limited the Saints to only 2 made 3-pointers for the game.  Seton came in averaging 5.75 3-pointers per game.  Other great efforts came from Rachel Merril (18 points, 14 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 assists),  Jill Silvanic (14 points, 9-10 from the foul line, 10 rebounds, 3 steals), and Olivia Bishop (6 points, 5 rebounds).  The Lady Indians return to action on Friday, 2/1/2013, for a clash with division rival Johnson City at Alan C. Reppert Gymnasium on the Owego campus.  Game time is 7:15 (5:30 JV).
